A New Year, A New Way to Work
Why I Chose a Flexible Workspace After Working From Home
By Chelle Peterson, Co-Founder & COO, The Post Workspaces
If you’re a solo professional in Tucson, there’s a good chance you’ve spent a lot of time working from home over the last few years. For many of us, it started as a necessity—and for a while, it genuinely felt like a perk.
No commute. Comfortable clothes. Coffee always within reach.
But as we step into a new year, I’ve found myself asking a simple (and honest) question:
Is working from home still helping me do my best work—or is it just getting me by?
Even as someone who co-founded a coworking space, I work from home too. And while I value flexibility deeply, I also experience firsthand how blurred boundaries, constant distractions, and the lack of separation between work and life can quietly erode my focus, motivation, and balance.
That realization is exactly why I now work from a part-time private office—and why I believe a flexible workspace can be one of the most meaningful changes a solo professional can make to start the year with clarity and momentum.
The Hidden Cost of Working From Home
Working from home sounds ideal on paper.
But over time, here’s what I noticed—both personally and through conversations with so many professionals in our community:
Work creeping into evenings and weekends
Difficulty staying focused with household interruptions
A constant feeling of being “on,” but not always productive
Motivation fading as days begin to blur together
For solo professionals—consultants, creatives, real estate agents, attorneys, and small business owners—your focus and energy are your business. When those suffer, everything else tends to follow.
Why I Work From a Part-Time Private Office
Here’s the key: I don’t need a full-time office—and I’m very clear about that.
As COO of The Post Workspaces, my work is intentionally flexible. In addition to overseeing daily operations, I also continue to manage our rental properties, which means no two weeks look exactly the same. Some days are filled with professional development and financial meetings. Others require quiet, uninterrupted focus.
That’s exactly why a part-time private office works so well for me.
Rather than committing to space I don’t need every day, I book time in a private office each week. That simple decision helps me structure my schedule, protect focused work time, and be intentional about how I show up for my work.
When I’m in the office, I’m fully in work mode. Those hours are reserved for higher-level thinking, problem-solving, and moving important projects forward—whether that’s for The Post or for our rental properties. And when I leave, I can mentally shut work off and be present at home, something working from home never consistently allows..
The flexibility is what makes it sustainable. I get the benefits of a professional, distraction-free environment and the accountability of showing up for my work—without sacrificing the freedom that drew me to entrepreneurship in the first place.
For me, a part-time private office isn’t about having an office.
It’s about having the right space, at the right time, for the work I’m doing that week.
Flexibility Without Isolation
One of the biggest misconceptions about coworking is that it’s loud or distracting. In reality—especially in thoughtfully designed spaces—it’s often the opposite.
Having a private office doesn’t mean working in isolation. It means having choice.
Some days I close the door and dive into deep work. Other days, I step into the common areas, grab a coffee, say hello to familiar faces, or have an impromptu conversation that sparks a new idea.
That light sense of community—without pressure or obligation—is incredibly motivating, especially if you’ve been working alone for a long time.
A Fresh Start for the New Year
A new year naturally invites reflection. New goals. New habits. New energy.
If you’re feeling:
Stuck or unmotivated
Distracted at home
Ready for better boundaries between work and life
Curious about a more sustainable way to work
A flexible workspace might be the reset you didn’t realize you needed.
You don’t have to commit to a long-term lease or contract.
You don’t have to give up flexibility.
You just need a space that supports how you actually work best.
