The Best of Tucson: 9 Things To Do in August

At The Post, we’re certainly enjoying our summer, and we hope you are too! We’ve been loading up our schedules with all kinds of fun events and activities, so if you’re looking to add a few to your own, we’ve got you covered.

Check out these nine awesome things to do in Tucson and Oro Valley this August.

1. Reggae Thursdays at Chicago Bar

Date and Time: Thursdays, August 5, 12, 19, and 27 at 7:00 p.m.

Location: Chicago Bar, 5954 E. Speedway

Cost: Free to attend

What’s going on: If you feel like kicking back to some reggae and having a few cocktails and some tasty food, stop by Chicago Bar every Thursday in August for some great beats, vocals, and dancing.

2. Picture Rocks Food Fest

Date and Time: Fridays, August 6 and 20, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Location: C6780 N. Sandario Road

Cost: Free to attend but bring money for delicious snacks. 

What’s going on: Go for the delicious food and stay for the amazing live music at West Tucson’s biggest food event. You’ll find hundreds of delicious dinner menu choices and a dirt dance floor to get you moving. You can also take in a gorgeous sunset and refreshingly cool evening air to take your breath away. Bring the whole family, the kids, the furries, a couple of lawn chairs or blankets to sit on and a huge appetite.

3. Summer Safari Saturday Nights

Date and Time: Every Saturday in August from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Location: Reid Park Zoo, 3400 E. Zoo Court

Cost: From $6.50 to $10.50 (and free for zoo members) 

What’s going on: Take a trip to the zoo during the cooler evenings for some wildlife fun! Enjoy live music, games, wildlife activities, carousel rides, food, craft beer, prickly pear margaritas, wine and White Claws.

4. Meditation with Cats

Date and Time: Saturday, August 7, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. 

Location: 3025 N. Campbell Ave.

Cost: $25

What’s going on: We’ll be honest, this one made us a little bit curious–and we want to go just to see what it’s all about! Get some zen with some purr-fectly fun furry friends at El Jefe Cat Lounge. You can let your worries drift away and relax for a blissful hour of meditation.

5. Dogs and Wine at AZ Hops and Vines

Date and Time: Sunday, August 8, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Location: AZ Hops and Vines, 3450 Highway 82

Cost: Free to attend but bring money for food and drinks 

What’s going on: We just mentioned meditating with cats, so this one’s for the dog lovers!  This event is all about doing some good for some wonderful rescue pups. Visit the vineyard for some fun with dogs including contests for the best dog and owner look-alike, best trick, and best costume. There will also be games, live music, food, wine, sangria and local vendors, and you can bring towels, dog toys, dog food, leashes, or beds to donate to local rescues.

6. Critter Night at Mission Garden

Date and Time: Friday, August 20, from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.

Location: Mission Garden, 946 W. Mission Lane

Cost: Free!

What’s going on: Looking for a family-friendly event? Here’s one you’ll love. Stop by and learn about the animals of Mission Garden and the Sonoran Desert, and even experience live animals, nature activities, informational booths, special guest presenters, and more.

7. Oro Valley Movie on the Lawn: “The Call of the Wild”

Date and Time: Saturday, August 28, from 7:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. 

Location: Oro Valley Community & Recreation Center, 10555 N. La Cañada Drive.

Cost: Free!

What’s going on: Bring your blanket and lawn chairs for an evening out with the family and catch a screening of The Call of the Wild starring Harrison Ford. This movie tells the story of Buck, a big-hearted dog whose blissful domestic life gets turned upside down when he is suddenly uprooted from his California home and transplanted to the exotic wilds of the Alaskan Yukon in the 1890s. As the newest rookie on a mail-delivery dog sled team, Buck experiences the adventure of a lifetime as he ultimately finds his true place in the world.

8. Carpool Movie: “Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone”

Date and Time: Saturday, August 7, at 8:00 p.m.

Location: Cactus Drive-In Theatre, 6201 S. Wilmot Road

Cost: $8 per adult 

What’s going on: If you want to catch a movie with the family but would prefer to do it in a socially-distanced setting, stop by the Cactus Drive-In Theatre to catch a screening of the classic Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone. In this adaptation of the first of J.K. Rowling’s popular children’s novels about Harry Potter, a boy who learns on his eleventh birthday that he is the orphaned son of two powerful wizards and possesses unique magical powers of his own. He is summoned from his life as an unwanted child to become a student at Hogwarts, an English boarding school for wizards. There, he meets several friends who become his closest allies and help him discover the truth about his parents’ mysterious deaths at the hands of a powerful adversary. You can also donate back-to-school supplies benefiting Abbie School & Erickson Elementary–and receive $1 off concessions as a thank you for your donation. 

9. Zoom Cooking Class with Chef Janos Wilder

Date and Time: Saturday, August 14, from 10:00 a.m. until noon

Location: On Zoom 

Cost: $45 per person (register on Eventbrite)  

What’s going on: Chef Janos Wilder of The Carriage House is holding a virtual cooking class in collaboration with the San Xavier Co-Op Farm as part of a series of workshops presented by Tumamoc Hill’s Desert Laboratory. Wilder will show attendees how to create modern dishes with “wild and ancient ingredients.”
