The client acquisition process can be a long and challenging one. From finding new leads to getting in touch with them to finally landing a meeting and eventually signing them on, a lot of work goes into it–not to mention the number of them that simply fall through.

So, when you do finally land a new client, the impression you leave on them when you meet for the first time is critical.

No matter your industry or if you’re meeting them digitally or in-person, here are eight ways to make sure you look good in front of your new clients.

1. Do Your Research

Never come into your first meeting unprepared. Do your research on your new clients. The business, the people, all of it. Equip yourself with some talking points to show you’re interested in them and invested in the relationship.

2. Dress the Part

When it comes to picking your attire for a first meeting, try to think about it from the perspective of what would best align with the situation.

For instance, if you’re dealing with a start-up team, will they be uncomfortable or feel disconnected from you if you’re wearing a three-piece suit?

On the other hand, if you’re meeting with a client who works in a formal environment, a t-shirt wouldn’t be your best bet either.

And while it might feel wise to be the best-dressed person in the room, consider whether this might create a feeling of imbalance or convey that you’re trying to one-up your new client.

The way you dress for a meeting can have a big impact. Do it strategically.

3. Pick the Right Place

Whether you’re meeting virtually or in person, you need to pick the right venue for it.

For instance, if you’re meeting in person, a coffee shop might not be the most professional option at your disposal. It may be wiser to opt for a real meeting room that offers an upscale and professional feel to impress your clients.

And if you’re meeting digitally, consider your surroundings. You’ll be visible on camera so you don’t want to look like you’re in a dark, messy basement. Your surroundings should reflect your brand and your business in a way that gives a great impression to your clients.

When in doubt, you can always use a Zoom background or blur your surroundings to be safe.

4. Build Trust — common ground

All the best business relationships are built on a foundation of trust, so setting that tone early is an important piece of the first impression puzzle.

But that doesn’t always mean taking a business-only approach. Sometimes the best way to build trust is to find common ground from a personal perspective.

Be a person and a professional. When people feel like they really know you, it’s that much easier to trust you.

5. Listen Actively

Make sure your client knows you’re paying attention to what they’re saying. Ask thoughtful questions and take notes. Clarify things if you don’t understand them and reiterate points they’ve made.

Let them know they’ve got your undivided attention. It’ll let them know you value their time and their business.

6. Focus on Value

When you’re talking about your work together, don’t just focus on what you do. Instead, make sure to draw the direct connection between their needs, goals, or challenges and how your services or products will fulfill them.

The most impactful way to get people excited about a business relationship is to clearly articulate how you’re going to make their life and their business easier, better, and more successful.

7. Manage Your Non-Verbal Cues

Your words aren’t your only means of communication when you’re in a meeting with a new client. Your non-verbal cues are equally important.

Be mindful of your facial expressions and body language. Smile, make eye contact, sit up straight.

These cues will say just as much as your words will.

8. Know What’s Next

The last thing you want is for your new client to leave your meeting wondering what happens next.

Always go into a meeting with clearly defined next steps so that everyone can immediately spring into action building a strong and successful working relationship.

Landing clients takes a ton of hard work, and it’s exciting once you finally secure them. So, be sure to give off a great first impression and set the tone for the rest of the relationship.
