With the holidays behind us and a new year ahead, it’s time to start looking forward to all the fun and amazing things to do in our city.

To get this year underway, we’ve compiled seven great things to do in Tucson in January.

What’s going on: Our city is filled with incredible murals. So, if you’re looking for a reason to get outside, you might want to take a walking tour to see them.

2. Zoppe Multimedia Drive-In Circus

Date and Time: January 15 to 31, 2021 (check online for showtimes)

Location: 131 S Linda Ave

Cost: Tickets starting at $49 per car (tickets available for purchase online)

What’s going on: The Zoppé Family Circus is a one-ring circus that honors the history of their old-world Italian circus tradition. Starring Nino the clown, the circus is propelled by a central story (as opposed to individual acts) that features acrobatic feats, equestrian showmanship, canine capers, clowning, and plenty of audience participation. This year, the event has gone COVID-safe and has transformed into the world’s first multimedia drive-in circus. 


3. Art in the Park — Exuberance: An Artistic Botanical Experience

Date and Time: Wednesdays through Sundays, all January long from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.

Location: 1 Burrell St., Tubac

Cost: $7.00 for adults aged 14 and up, $2.00 for youth, and free for kids 6 and under

What’s going on: Stop by and experience a collection of art installations created by local artists, gardeners, creative thinkers, independent spirits, and garden dreamers. This endeavor is a celebration of individuality and collaboration, traditional and experimental, natural and artificial.


4. Tucson Desert Song Festival

Date and Time: Beginning January 20th and running through February

Location: Various locations and times; check online for specifics

Cost: Some shows are free and others range from $30 to $35; check online for specifics 

What’s going on: Music enthusiasts will love the Tucson Desert Song Festival, a unique three-weekend blend of singing in orchestral, chamber, choral, and solo formats along with related lectures and master classes in the warmth and charm of Arizona’s renowned Sonoran Desert resort region. Internationally celebrated soloists join the Tucson Symphony Orchestra, True Concord Voices and Orchestra, UA Presents, Arizona Opera, and other organizations, as well as masterclasses and lectures in intimate settings at the University of Arizona School of Music.


5. Jane Hamilton Fine Art Presents: New Year, New Outlook

Date and Time: Friday, January 22, and Saturday, January 23

Location: 2890 E. Skyline Drive, Suite 180

Cost: Free

What’s going on: New Year, New Outlook is an outdoor sculpture show featuring Tucson sculptor Mark Wallis who creates fantastic contemporary steel and kinetic art sculptures.


6. La Encantada Fine Arts Festival

Date and Time: Saturday, January 16, from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.

Location: La Encantada Shopping Center, 2905 E Skyline DRive

Cost: Free  

What’s going on: From metalwork to locally-designed fashion, the open-air La Encantada Fine Art Market is an opportunity to support local artisans and fine art crafters while strolling the lush and ever-blooming garden walkways of the outdoor La Encantada Shopping Center. Artists are among some of the hardest hit during the pandemic, and this festival invites the community to come out to support their work and be inspired by their creativity, in a safe and socially distanced atmosphere.


7. Mexican Mondays at Catalina Brewing Company

Date and Time: Every Monday in January, from 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.

Location: Catalina Brewing Company, 6918 N Camino Martin #120

Cost: Free but bring cash for food and drinks
What’s going on: If you’re looking for a fun way to blow off the Monday Blues, head over to the Catalina Brewing Company for some cold beer, good food, and a great time. There will be Sonoran Dogs and $2 Tecate or Tecate Light on offer!
