We absolutely love our vibrant Tucson community and all the amazing things to see and do here. That’s why, each month, we’ll be profiling some amazing things for you to do in the Tucson and Oro Valley areas.
September has brought with it a ton of newly reopened places to visit as well as some amazing events and activities.
If you’re looking for some fun ways to spend the day, look no further. Here are four things happening this month.
1. El Toro Flicks
Date and Time: All fall between 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. (check website for details)
Location: There are two locations — 198 S. Granada Ave in downtown Tucson and 10901 N. Oracle Road in Oro Valley
Cost: $20.90 and up per vehicle
What’s going on: Drive-in for date night or family night and enjoy movies on a state-of-the-art LED big screen. Snacks are available for purchase or bring your own. El Toro Flicks offers two locations: one in downtown Tucson and the other in Oro Valley. Check online for featured films, screening times, and to purchase tickets in advance!
2. Open Air Cinema at The Loft
Date and Time: September 17 through October 1 (check the website for times and tickets)
Location: The Loft Cinema, 3233 E. Speedway Blvd.
Cost: $15 for members, $20 for non-members
What’s going on: The Loft has built a new screen on the back of the theater for their new “Open Air Cinema Series.” Open Air Cinema screenings will take place outdoors at The Loft Cinema and seating is limited — sanitized chairs will be provided, or you can supply your own). Social Distancing will be strictly enforced with limited seating and masks must be worn at all times — except when eating/drinking.
3. Turquoise Trail Guided Walking Tour
Date and Time: Friday, September 25, from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m.
Location: Presidio San Agustín del Tucson, 196 N. Court Ave.
Cost: $15 for members, $20 for non-members
What’s going on: If you want to see your city in a whole new way, this is the perfect activity for you. Led by knowledgeable guides, this walking tour covers the 2.5 mile Turquoise Trail that winds through the heart of downtown Tucson. On the tour, you’ll learn about the city’s fascinating history and see some architectural gems. Please note that masks and social distancing will be required!
4. The Tucson Go Red for Women Digital Experience Presented by The American Heart Association
Date and Time: Thursday, September 24, from noon to 1:00 p.m.
Location: Online using Zoom (click here to register)
Cost: Free with registration
What’s going on: You can do some good in the world and give back from the comfort of your own home by supporting the Go Red for Women movement. The American Heart Association, which is working hard to support the medical professionals on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic and providing resources to heart and stroke patients and families during this unprecedented time, is hosting a one-of-a-kind free digital experience. The goal of the Tucson Go Red for Women Digital Experience is to touch more hearts, educate more women, and raise more life saving funds than ever before.
5. Tucson Botanical Gardens
Date and Time: Daily from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. with evening hours from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Thursdays through Sundays, effective September 17
Location: 2150 N. Alvernon Way, Tucson
Cost: $8 to $15 for those aged 4 and older; free under 4 years of age
What’s going on: The perfect fusion of plants, art, science, history, and culture, the Tucson Botanical Gardens offer something for everyone. Located on the site of the historic Porter property, it’s been named the best Secret Garden in America. Among mature Stroll through and take it all in!
6. Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum
Date and Time: Daily from 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Location: 2021 N. Kinney Road, Tucson
Cost: From $9.95 to $21.95; free for those aged 2 and under
What’s going on: Recently reopened, The Desert Museum is dedicated to providing a naturalistic and enriching sanctuary for animals and plants. Here you’ll find everything from gardens that showcase the Sonoran Desert’s vibrant ecosystem to stingrays, fish, otters, mountain lions, Mexican gray wolves, black bears, and much more. If you want to see the entire museum, make sure to set aside between two and three hours!
